Terms
The short version: your subscription covers one writer on all the Macs they personally use. Your files are always yours, in formats that outlive us. If something's wrong, email a human and we'll make it right.
The trial
Every feature is free for 30 days, no credit card, no strings. When the trial ends, Slate stops accepting new writing until you subscribe — but your scripts stay on your disk as plain .fountain files you can open anywhere, and reading scripts and reviewing collaborators' proposals stays free forever.
The license
- A subscription is $79 per year and covers one writer — you can activate Slate on any Macs you personally use.
- Activation is tied to your purchase email. Don't share it around; do install it on your desktop and your laptop.
- Writing partners don't need their own subscription to review, comment on, and merge the revisions you exchange — that's free by design.
Billing, cancelling, refunds
- Payments are processed by Stripe; the subscription renews yearly and Stripe emails your receipts.
- To cancel, email support@slatescript.app (or reply to any receipt) — cancellation stops the next renewal, and you keep access through the year you've paid for.
- If a charge shouldn't have happened — you meant to cancel, or Slate isn't working out — email us promptly and we'll make it right.
Your work
Everything you write in Slate belongs to you, obviously and entirely. We claim no rights to it — we couldn't even read it if we wanted to, because it never leaves your Mac (see Privacy).
If your subscription lapses
Slate returns to the same state as an expired trial: your files remain on disk in open formats, reading and reviewing stay free, and re-activating with your purchase email unlocks everything again.
The honest disclaimers
- Slate is provided as-is. We work hard on reliability — automatic snapshots, atomic saves, plain-text copies — but no software is perfect, so keep backups of work that matters (Slate's cloud-copy folder makes that one click).
- We may update these terms; the date above will change if we do. Continuing to use Slate after a change means the new terms apply.
- Don't use Slate to break the law, and don't try to break Slate's licensing — both of those end the deal.
